The unsavory term stems from the tea’s Mandarin name ‘ya shi xiang’ (鴨屎香), which literally translates to ‘duck shit fragrance.’

As legend goes, the tea was discovered by a farmer who deliberately gave it an unappetizing name so no one else would covet it.
