Forget peanut butter and jelly! Chinese foodies have begun slathering their toast with matcha sauce, a thick, green tea-flavored paste.
Known as mo cha jiang in Mandarin, the condiment can be purchased online for 20 to 60 RMB (about 2.8 to 8.5 USD).
Some have even created their own homemade versions that call for matcha powder, heavy cream, milk, and sugar to be reduced over low heat.
The invention of matcha sauce is part of a larger craze revolving around the green tea powder. Eateries and confectioners are incorporating it everything, from KitKats to ice cream and smoothies.
While matcha has been hot among youth in the past few years, it dates back over a thousand years. It was created in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) and brought to Japan in the 12th century.
