Chinese Opera Performers In Costume VS in Real Life

Photographer Chen Junjie, who specializes in fashion photography, was intrigued by the discrepancy between Chinese opera performers’ exuberant stage personas and their humble lives in the countryside.

This stark contrast is the starting point of Yù, a series of portraits of Chinese opera troupe members posing in the rural fields of Henan.

Yu opera or Henan opera differs from the better-known Peking opera and China’s ‘national style’ in dialect, music, characters, costumes, and makeup. The lesser-known opera form is essentially more ‘localized.’

Chen captured the troupe members dressed both in their ordinary clothes and full costumes to give viewers a full sense of who they really are.
