Fiji Issues Controversial Banknote Featuring Chinese God of Wealth

On August 8, a new 88 cent collectable note was released by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. The banknote is purely a collectable and will only be available for a limited time.

The banknote was launched on the eighth day of the eighth month of the year. Needless to say, the number eight is highly auspicious in Chinese culture, and is said to attract wealth and fortune.

Some see the printing of the banknote as #sus given China’s increased economic presence in the Pacific.
