Ali Wong Shines in New Netflix Show Beef

In Netflix’s new, road-rage-fueled TV series Beef, Ali Wong takes on one of her best roles yet.

Wong, an American stand-up comedian and actress, plays the show’s anti-hero main character, Amy Lau.

Amy is a small business owner married to the wealthy son of a famous artist; her life seems picture-perfect, yet a road rage incident between her and a stranger (a spectacular Steven Yeun) threatens to blow her existence wide open.

Beef is a dark drama-comedy produced by A24, the company behind the big winner at this year’s Oscars Everything Everywhere All At Once. The show has garnered critical acclaim, with a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wong navigates the darker emotional undertow of the show with aplomb and humor. Many predict an Emmy nomination — and a win — for her performance.

Wong, who is Chinese-Vietnamese, graduated from UCLA with a major in Asian American Studies before pursuing her dream of becoming a comedian.

She moved to New York after college and wrote and acted in her own shows, often performing up to nine times a night.

Later, she began writing for and acting in shows like Fresh Off the Boat and Big Mouth.

Forbes has praised her as setting a new gold standard for comedy, and in 2020, Time magazine named her one of its 100 Most Influential People.

Wong has challenged stereotypes and inspired many throughout her career, especially as an Asian woman breaking into the male-dominated world of American stand-up.
