Paris Saint-Germain Soccer Club Rocks Chinese Jerseys for the New Year
During a match against Stade de Reims on January 29, French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) wore new jerseys with a slight change: Each player’s name was emblazoned in Chinese characters.
The Chinese jerseys were worn in celebration of the Chinese New Year, which began on January 22.2023 is the second time that the team has done this.
The special-edition jerseys are not PSG's only festive tribute: The team’s home stadium was also kitted out with red lanterns, flowers, parasols, and more.
Despite the celebratory vibes at PSG's home stadium, the team failed to beat their opponents. The game ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw.
Even so, Chinese soccer fans have not stopped cheering for PSG ever since.A tag titled ‘PSG wears Chinese jerseys’ on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo has raked in 30 million views at the time of writing.
PSG are the defending Ligue 1 champions, and it is home to soccer stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappé.
PSG’s small gesture goes a long way in connecting with China’s massive soccer fanbase. By some counts, there are about 700 million soccer fans in the country.
