Plum cake or mei hua gao (梅花糕) is a popular street snack found in cities such as Nanjing, Suzhou, and Wuxi in China’s southern Jiangsu province.
It is said to originate in the Ming dynasty and gained further popularity during the Qing dynasty. Given how long the sweet has been around, no wonder it is beloved in the region.
Batter is poured into a specially-shaped mold so the resulting dessert resembles a plum blossom.
Bean paste is a classic filling for this dessert. To make the treat even more visually appealing, colorful toppings like dried fruits are scattered on top.
