The Chinese Reggae Scene You Didn’t Know Existed
Believe it or not, China loves
reggae music
. In fact, the music genre is a significant
cultural export
for the country.
Originating in Jamaica in the late 1960s, reggae has a huge community in China’s southwestern
Yunnan province
, especially among the
Wa ethnic group
.
With their innate
sense of rhythm
and predilection for
dancing and singing
, the Wa and other minorities have created a unique version of reggae, and use it to
express their identity and culture
.
In the pilot episode of RADII’s
INTO THE NIGHT
mini documentary series, we visit some Yunnan-based musicians to discuss the relationship between reggae, cultural identity, and the earth.
