35 Years Ago This Month, KFC Opened in China

November 12, 1987
, KFC opened its first Chinese store near
Qianmen in Beijing.
At the time, it was the
biggest KFC
in the world. The store has three floors totaling
1,100 square feet
, and it is still open to this day.
Excited Chinese consumers mobbed the restaurant for months after it opened. Case in point: in the first 24 hours, it made over
83,000 USD.
KFC was the first fast-food chain to open a store in China. Now, there are
over 8,600 locations
across the country.
